On stationery with an illustration (published by A. Metcalfe) of East Retford Railway Station at the head from Retford [Nottinghamshire, England], A. Metcalfe, bookseller, writes a question to an unknown publisher or editor. Metcalfe wants to know if light and shade shown by pencil or ink is considered to be a drawing or painting.

This collection of miscellaneous documents, written between the 13th to 19th centuries, mostly relate to land and property transactions and maintenance in England. The bulk of the documents are dated from the 16th through 19th centuries. The remaining documents concern legal and official matters, family papers, probate and wills, and accounts and business. The documents pertain to many of the counties in England, as well as some matters taking place in other parts of the British Isles.

Nicodemus was one of the first black colonies established in the state of Kansas after the Emancipation Proclamation.Also included in the back of the volume are three newspaper clippings from 1959 about the town of Nicodemus and its inhabitants. This collection consists of book page proofs and research materials related to Donald Worster's book, A River Running West: The Life of John Wesley Powell, published in 2001. The book focuses on 19th century Western United States explorer and environmental conservationist John Wesley Powell, particularly on his 1869 Colorado River expedition.

Overview

Evidently an admirer of Irish-born English novelist and clergyman Laurence Sterne, Fenton wrote this account of his travels through Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland in the early years of the 19th century. Loose items found in the volume have been physically separated and are located at MS P112.

This study was initiated as a class term paper about the architecture and design of the Watkins National Bank building. The interior detail work as well as the larger structure are described, and numerous photographs are included, as are a bibliography of references, interviews, and correspondence used in researching the topic. There is a brief biographical sketch of Jabez B. Watkins and the background on the construction of the bank building.

This collection consists of the manuscript volume "Tausend Jahre Erlaheim" written by William Zirkel, and its English translation completed by Lisbeth Sass, with a forward by Vansel S. Johnson dated from 1960. The volumes include mounted illustrations, facsimiles, maps, photographs, and text regarding the history of Erlaheim in Ravensburg, Germany. Johnson's ancestors, the Johannes family, came to Valley Falls, Kansas in the 1860s from Erlaheim.

"A.A.B. Cavaness Poems"

A.A.B. Cavaness was a Kansan poet who lived in Baldwin City, Douglas County, Kansas. This collection consists of a single folder containing correspondence from Cavaness addressed to Edith M. Clarke (assistant librarian at the University of Kansas), two booklets of poems in honor of President William McKinley, a postmarked envelope, and "Josephine," a booklet containing one poem.

Aaron Friesen autograph album

Aaron Friesen was born in 1899 at Inman (McPherson County), Kansas to Mennonite parents. He was age six at Christmas 1905, when he received this autograph album, made in Germany, from his uncle William E. Harms of Inman. The content includes signed sentiments from his parents and uncles, dated January 1906.
